The two most important groups of friendly bacteria are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. These two genera, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are only two of many genera that inhabit the body. Many others, such as Eubacterium, Fusobacterium, Peptococaceae, Rheumanococcus and Streptococcus, also cooperate within the body’s cavities. These genus names differentiate the organisms by their cell qualities as well as activities. A further differentiation is the species name, which follows the genus. The species name further describes a particular organism. Within each species, however, there can be numerous subspecies.

Still within the species and subspecies can be different strains. A strain may be identified by its distinctive activities, effects, cell shape or other charcteristics. A strain may also be distinguished by its culture medium—in other words, a different habitat.

The links to the right and below list the different species that we document in our book, Probiotics: Protection Against Infection.
