The medicinal use of cultured and fermented foods dates back thousands of years. Probiotics have been used by the Egyptians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Japanese, the Chinese, the Indians, the Northern Europeans and the Eastern Europeans for thousands of years. These ancient societies found that probiotic cultures not only could preserve foods: They also provided many health benefits.
Science is still unfolding the complex mechanisms and many benefits derived from the more than 500 species of still largely unresearched microorganisms that inhabit our bodies from head to toe with vast populations concentrated in our intestinal tracts.
